Al is an electronics engineer with more than thirty years experience in telecommunications and electromagnetic effects.
As a member of the US Antarctic Research Program, Al participated in fifteen scientific expeditions and has the distinction of having crossed the "terrible" Drake Passage, off Cape Horn, eighteen times as a crew member aboard the Antarctic Research Vessel HERO.
He is a US Coast Guard-licensed Radio Officer in the US Merchant Marine and a Master Scuba diver.
Al is an active expeditioner, has traveled to more than fifty countries and has participated in many DX radio expeditions including:

Al is a Fellow in the Explorers Club and is a member of the American Polar Society, Old Antarctic Explorers Association, NCDXF, INDXA, ODXG, AMSAT, IEEE, NARTE, and ARRL.
Al is married to Dr. Haydee Lena-Hernandez who was one of the first Argentine women to participate in an Argentine Antarctic research expedition and is a member of the Old Antarctic Explorers Association.
Al and Haydee have two sons, Alberto and Esteban and three granddaughters, Amarillys (KI4BUE), Annahlia (KJ4UQR) and Tatiana.
