São Tomé and Principe is a twin-island nation found on the equatorial west coast of Africa within the Atlantic Ocean.
The capital is located on the island of São Tomé (larger and more mountainous), which is the most important next to Príncipe. The island territory is made up mostly of equatorial jungles. The official language is Portuguese, used together with the Creole dialect and local languages. Likewise, the majority of the population professes the Catholic religion (70%). At the level of internal stability, although it became independent in 1975, democratic reforms did not arrive until the end of the 1980s. The country’s economy is supported by the service sector and cocoa exports, which has decreased in recent years. Despite the difficulties it encounters in maintaining inflation control, it has enormous potential for the development of oil resources and the tourism industry. It has a maritime Exclusive Economic Zone that catalyzes its capacity as a logistics base in the Gulf of Guinea.í
